Chrysler Repair: timing belt installation, how do you align the marks?, crank shaft, haynes manual

Question
how do i line the marks up on the timing belt

Answer
Hi Roger,
There are differences in how this is done with the various Chrysler engines, so you need to tell me which engine and year model you have. But in general, the crank shaft pulley is usually at TDC of the compression stroke of cyl. no. 1 (make sure by looking at the position of the valves as to which of the two possibilities you are dealing with for that point). Then the camshaft pulleys are also to be aligned with nearby hash marks, usually on the timing belt covers, though the markings differ. And then there is also the matter of the tensioner and the movement that is involved when you try to install the belt which is bound to happen unless you follow a very specific procedure. The marks have to be aligned properly when you are done with the installation and that does not always mean that you start the job with them aligned, etc. If you want to know specifically you could do one of several things: get a Haynes manual for your, go to a local library that may have a repair manual collection, check in at Autozone.com and see if they have it listed there in their repair section, or write me back and tell me what you are dealing with and I'll give it a try. Use the "thank and rate" tab where you can tell me the engine and year in the "comment" section.
