Chrysler Repair: Oil Pressure Sensor: 02 PT, oil filter housing, oil light

Question
My 2002 PT Cruiser is making a chiming sound and the oil light come on when I come to a stop at a red light or stop sign.  The car is running fine, no unusual noises, not running hot, everything appears to be normal except for the oil light being on and the chiming.  help!

Answer
Hi Edgar,
My manuals don't show exactly where the oil sensor is located on the 2.0 or 2.4L but the pump in on the front of the engine near the oil filter housing. I suspect you will find the sensor very near the filter, it has a single gray/violet wire. You can either remove the sensor and test for pressure with a calibrated gauge where you would want to find 4 psi or more at idle, and 25-80 psi at 3,000 rpm OR you can replace the sensor and see if that resolved the problem. Another approach would be to increase the "weight" of the oil one step at the next change which raises the idle pressure and usually solves the false warning problem without any risk to the engine.
