Motorcycle Repair: CLUTCH SLIPAGE?????, honda 650, repair manual

Question
I recently bought a well abused 85 honda 650 nighthawk. It runs strong 1st-4th gears but when you get in 5th or 6th gear you have to baby it.If you ease the gas you will speed up but if you gun it,it just reves the motor. Is it possible for the clutch to slip on some gears and not others?IF so do I replace all disks? Thanks Chris ,,,Emily

Answer
Hi Emily.
It sounds like this bike has been rode hard and put away wet.

If the clutch isn't slipping in all gears yet, then it will be soon enough.

The problem could be that you do need a clutch rebuild.  It isn't difficult to do.  Just follow the directions in the repair manual......you do have a repair manual, don't you?  NO????!!  Then you must leap right up and go out and get one. :)  It will have detailed instructions for disassembly and reassembly of the clutch.

If you rebuild the clutch, then you will need new clutchplates and springs.

Good luck and ride safe.
