Chrysler Repair: starter or solenoid or?, solenoid switch, motor armature

Question
1996 Chrysler concord lx 3.3L every few times try to start you can hear it  kick in then in the middle of starting it stops like turning off a power then it will click when you try to start maybe 3 or 4 times then start about 2 months is this common for solienoid on starter or ignition switch

Answer
Hi Bruce,
It could be a weak battery, or the fat red wire from the + post clamp to the starter motor might be a bit corroded or loose at either end (but disconnect the - clamp before touching it), or it could be the starter motor armature, or the solenoid switch on the starter motor. I doubt it is the starter relay or ignition switch because if you hear a loud click, but with no starter motor rotation, that has to mean the ignition switch and the relay are working. The high current part of the system is what is marginal, but aside from checking out the age of the battery as compared to its warranteed life and the state of charge (hygromter reading or charge it), the quality of the red wire connections (and the ground wire connections from the - clamp) there is not much more you can do. If those all are good then I would suspect you need to rebuild the starter motor along with the solenoid switch. I like having it done at a rebuilder because you know the history of your present motor. That is how I would approach this situation which I too have experienced in the past.
