Chrysler Repair: 2001 PT Cruiser error P0601, code situation, autozone

I took my car to the DEQ for registration and found it would not pass because of the check engine light - was told it was Diagnostic Trouble Code P0601 - I checked at a dealership and they said I needed to replace PCM - is that the only solution - its pretty costly.

Yes, if it is indeed a P0601 then that is an internal failure, according to the manual. But I would get another readout of the fault code situation at an independent garage (~$40) or an Autozone parts store (free). I am suspicious that the vehicle runs well if that were the code, but another readout for corroboration is worth it. Let me know if you get a different code.
