Chrysler Repair: key will not turn, jeep 99 grnd chero., friction reduction, powdered graphite

Question
key will not turn. Steering is locked..tried both keys, no luck..
any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Steve,
The lock cylinder is probably worn out. A couple of things to try:
Powdered graphite (which comes in a plastic tube with a spray hole tip) can be poofed into the interface between the cylinder and the mounting hole for lubrication/friction reduction (also poof the key hole in case a tumbler is hanging up).
Put the key in and then tap on the end of the key with a hammer (that idea came from a reader of my 'previous answers').
To remove the cylinder for replacement you have to be able to move the cylinder to the run position. Then if you remove the shroud around the housing/steering column you will find a tab on the side of the housing which when pushed will allow the cylinder to release. Leave it in that position (disconnect battery) and then reinsert the new cylinder in that identical position so as to mate properly with the ignition switch.
