Answer
Hi Rick,
It very well could be a vacuum leak or it could be an idle speed motor control problem. Have you tried to get a fault code readout from the engine controller? You didn't mention the year but it may be that using the ignition key will do it. "On-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch either the odometer to see if the mileage changes to show a 4-digit code number, or for the check engine light to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat to be sure to get an accurate count. If neither shows an answer then get a readout at an Autozone parts store for free or maybe around $40 as an independent garage. Let me know of any numbers you get and we'll see if they are related to the idle speed problem. If it were a vacuum leak you might detect that by squirting very small sprays of starting fluid around the perimeter of the intake manifold (but be very careful not to use very much because of the risk of fire). Any point where you spray which causes a change in the idle speed will be suspected area for the leak.
