Chrysler Repair: 1994 Plymouth Sundance: front wheel bearings, front wheel bearings, plymouth sundance

Question
Hello. I am going to replace the front wheel bearings
(a complete assembly) and dust seals(transmission side) in my sons 1994 Sundance. I have had the bearing assembly out, but don't see how the seal is installed. Does it go in from the outside or do I have to remove the shaft and install it from the back side? Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Mark,
My manual for '94 shows the grease seal and wear sleeve to go on from the back side of the hub/bearing assembly after assembly is installed in the knuckle( did you get both?). It doesn't speak of separating the bearing from the hub assembly, but rather buying an entire assembly, unbolting the 4 bolts, and removing the old assembly. It describes the need to separate the tie rod from the steering arm and the ball joint from the steering knuckle and then pulling the steering knuckle off the end of the drive shaft. Once that is done you unbolt the hub assembly, etc. Don't let the outer end of the drive shaft hang from the inner C/V Joint, rather support the end.
After the hub and bearing assembly is installed in the knuckle then you put the grease seal in from the back side, and after that a wear sleeve goes on the end of the c/v joint(wide side is inboard). It shows using an installer (Miller tool C-4698 for the installation process). The tool is reversible, one side to install the seal the other to install the wear seal. The wear sleeve goes onto the c/v joint housing. Lube the surfaces of both the seal and wear sleeve before reassembling drive shaft and ball joint which are put together simultaneously. Then reverse the assembly process. Let me know if you need any torque specs., etc.
