Chrysler Repair: a/c clutch not engaging though activated, jeep wiring, screw driver

Question
The a/c clutch on my 2000 Jeep sometimes will not engage.  If I touch it with a long screw driver, I can feel that it's magnatized and if I tap it, it will engage (all with the engine running and switch to a/c, of course). Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Vince,
About the only possibility is that there is not a full 12V getting to the clutch from the clutch relay due to corroded points in the relay. So check that voltage at the clutch wire and if it is full battery voltage equivalent then it would seem a new clutch may be needed. You might also check the fuse that supplies the relay to be sure it is cleanly connected in its socket. Unfortunately I don't have Jeep wiring diagrams so I can't tell you which fuse that is.
