Chrysler Repair: Running Hot when not in motion, gauge heads, chrysler sebring

Question
I have a 2002 Chrysler Sebring LX....my problem is this....when stopped for an extended period the temp gauge heads towards "max"...as soon as traffic starts to move the engine cools down pretty rapidly.  I have not noticed any leaks (puddles) or anything in the engine compartment indicating a leak.  Is it the thermostat?

Answer
Hi Greg,
I doubt it is the thermostat because that would rather set the routine temperature while you are in motion and that is evidentally OK (1/2-3/4 scale).
How about the fan at the radiator, does it come 'on' when you are stopped  in traffic and the gauge rises? You should be able to notice it audibly or pull over and open the hood to check. It might be an inaccurate temp sensor, a faulty fan motor relay, or a defective fan motor, or their circuitry that would cause that.
Let me know what you find on that subject and we can go from there. Tell me if the "LX" is a convertible, and also mention which engine you have.
