Chrysler Repair: 97 Dodge Avenger: trans controller replacement?, dodge avenger, new brain

Question
We have been dealing with a transmission problem for about 3 years. Its been replaced twice, and the brain has been flashed. it still down shifts hard with a clunk. The code that come up is 1698. Dodge suggests putting a new brain in it but won't say whether or not it will fix the problem, what should we do?

Answer
Hi Kim,
Before replacing the control module (brain) there are about 7 other possibilities which the shop should have considered:
ignition switch output (run/start) open
                      (start)open
                      (start)short
fused B+ circuit open
ground circuit(s) open
pci bus circuit open
body control module defective

These possibilities can be tested using the transmission diagnostic manual and a diagnostic tester at the dealership. I would inquire as whether those other possibilities have been considered in the prior services and removed from the list of possible causes. Check the cost for any 'open' tests that could be run and compare to cost of a new module and installation. Then decide which way to proceed. It would be a shame to replace it and still have the problem. Won't they warranty the job? You might consider an independent non-franchise shop for a second opinion.
