Chrysler Repair: 97 Cirrus No Start, No spark, pulley bolt, crank pulley

Question
I bought a 97 Cirrus, supposed timing belt bad.  Wrong!  It has no spark.  I read the distributors go bad a lot so I bought another one that was known good.  I plugged it in, not installed and spun the shaft with the cap on it and wires.  Still no spark, the fuel pump does cycle on and off when I spin the shaft though.  I had a friend check to see if the pump was running when I cranked it with the original dist.  It was but still no spark.  I have a fairly nice scanner and it shows no previous codes or current codes.  If the computer is bad can I just replace it or is it VIN specific?  I appreciate any help you can give me.  I have worked on car, mostly chrysler for over 25 years.

Answer
Hi Jesse,
I wonder if the other engine position sensor, the crankshaft sensor, might be bad? It is located just below the distributor. It might be failed in such a manner as to not set a code. You could measure the voltage between the gray/black and black/light blue wires to be sure whether it is pulsing when the ignition is 'on' and you turn it over by means of a ratchet on the crank pulley bolt. It should oscillate between 5V and 0.3V as you turn it slowly. Also, check the dark green/orange wire on the single wire connector of the distributor, again while turning the engine over, this time via the starter. It should show 12V as it too is powered by the same source (ASD relay) as the fuel pump. If it has 12V and you get pulsing on the crank sensor then you should get spark unless the distributor rotor is shot. But you could verify that you get the similar pulsing between the distributor's tan/white and black/light blue wires when you crank via the pulley bolt. At that point, with no spark, you might well think of a new PCM. I don't think it is VIN specific but try to get the same part number. And try to get one from a vehicle that is set up identically as your regarding to a theft system or no theft system.
Sorry to be so slow in responding but your question was sent to the "pool" only recently where I noticed it.
