Chrysler Repair: 1996 hood latch, hood latch, release lever

Question
When I tried to open the hood of my 1996 Sebring the latch would not release the hood. The wire is pulling and I can hear it sliding through the routing, but it doesn't release it. Is this something I can correct or do I need to take it to my mechanic?
Thank you for your assistance.

Answer
Hi Kevin,
In my experience the way to open the latch to affect replacement of the cable is to get under the front of the car and look up in order to observe the location of the latch mechanism. Once you find it there should be lever which if pushed toward the driver side of the vehicle will release the latch. On the Sebring convertible the lever is on the lower side of the latch so it should be accessible from below, but the trick will be to find the latch mechanism. You may need to remove a plastic panel that hides that area. It is probably in front of the radiator but I can't be sure, so look on both sides of the radiator assembly. Once you find it have a helper pull out and push in on the release lever which may reveal the location of the lever near by to the cable end. Probably the knob on the end of the cable has broken off but it still should point you toward the lever. The same idea applies to the Sebring sedan, from what I can tell.
