Chrysler Repair: 95 jeep trans wont shift, transmission controller, independent shop

Question
my jeep is not shifting into 3rd gear all others seem fine just goes down the road with out the final shift what should i check will changing fluid help

Answer
Hi Bob,
Refusing to shift is a fallback condition of the transmission when it senses some sort of a problem which if allowed to use all gears may cause unnecessary damage. It is called limp-in mode. It also means that a fault code that describes the problem has been stored in the memory of the transmission controller. You can get a readout of the code by means of a reader that plugs into a socket under the dash. An Autozone parts store will do a readout for free or an independent shop will do it for around $40. Ask the code number(s), what they mean, what they recommend, and how much? Then write back and we'll compare that to the manual.
Sorry to be answering so late but I didn't see the question in the 'pool' until recently.
