Chrysler Repair: 1994 concord trans., chrysler drb, drb ii

Question
QUESTION: trans. not shifting to 3rd after applying the break pedel
if you shift to N befor stepping on the break it shifts fine. if you stop turn off the car and restart it shifts fine untill you step on the break?

ANSWER: Hi Bob,
That relationship to the brake pedal usage is not electical in nature, but possibly could be related to the operation of an internal clutch (one of several in the trans). I would suggest that you have the trans controller memory read for any stored fault codes. There is a 6-pin plug under the dash to the right of the steering column, blue in color, into which you plug a Chrysler DRB II reader. That can be done at a dealer or an independent trans shop (not a nationwide franchise). Ask for the fault code numbers, what they mean, and what they say needs to be done and for how much. Then write back and we can compare that to the shop manual. It appears to me that you are getting into "limp-in mode" which the trans does when it sense a problem that needs to be fixed to avoid further damage.

QUESTION: codes were 36 ,  56,51,     gear ratio error

Answer
Hi Bob,
It would appear that the input speed sensor may be defective. The code 56 points to that as the cause of the error.  It simply screws into the side of the trans,  on the driver's side, with an electical plug which releases after gently lifting a release tab on the side. It should be torqued to about the same amount as a spark plug. You may be lucky if this is the cause as otherwise it would be something internal. So give that a try. Also check the wiring to the sensor for any damage, even before replacing it. It is about mid-level on the side of the trans, to the left of the vertical shifter rod. There is another sensor, output turbine, that looks just like it to the right of the rod but the 56 code points to the turbine sensor
