Chrysler Repair: Diagnostic code 38, dipstick tube, torque converter

Question
What is a 38?  I have a 1992 Lebarron and I ran an OBD and it came up with a 38 I can't find any such code anywhere?

Answer
Hi Lori,
That code is probably stored in the transmission controller memory, since the engine doesn't have a code with that number assigned to it. For the automatic transmission it means that the feature of locking together the input and output turbines for the torque converter, which can happen once you have reached a reasonable speed and are cruising, is not being accomplished. It would increase your mileage a bit if it could be. The causes, according to the manual is either transmission fluid being a bit low or a bit high, or an internal malfunction. If you check the transmission dipstick and find it to be a bit low, then only add type ATF +3 or ATF +4. Do not under any circumstances use Dexron type fluid. You add fluid via the dipstick tube, and of course add a little at a time so as not to overfill. If the fluid level is normal, then it indicates an internal transmission problem, but this malfunction is not so important as to merit a costly repair.
