Chrysler Repair: CAM SENSOR IN MY 2001 CHRYSLER SEBRING, chrysler sebring, cam sensor

Question
WHAT CAUSES THE CAM SENSOR TO GO UP IN THE CAR. WHAT EFFECTS DOES IT DO TO THE CAR AND HOW DO I GET IT FIXED.

Answer
Hi Yolanda,
If you have the 2.5L V-6 the cam sensor is located inside the distributor (otherwise, write back and let me know). In the other engines is it positioned on the engine cylinder head separately, and there is no distributor. Inside the distributor it gets warmer and therefor it is more likely to fail sooner than if it were external on the engine surface. Also, it may be the case that the sensor is built-in to the distributor and can't be bought as a separate part which makes it more expensive to replace.
The cam sensor synchonizes the fuel injector pulses with the position of the pistons so as inject the fuel at the proper moment in each cylinder.
I would try to find out whether you can replace the sensor without replacing the entire distributor, and if not, then you have to replace it, assuming that you have a verified fault code stored in the engine computer that says it is not functioning properly. It can be tested simply with a voltmeter if you want to verify the code readout is accurate.
Let me know if you have a different engine than what I have described.
