Chrysler Repair: 1998 Dodge Intrepid: not getting heat, three knobs, water hoses

Question
when I turn on the heat on my car the only thing that comes out is cold air. What could be the reason that it is doing that?

Answer
Hi Felicita,
It may be that the heated water in the system is not circulating thru the heater core due to an air bubble, or due to a clogged heater core, or if those are not the case then the air door that directs the air to pass thru the heater core is not positioned to do that. You could check the flow of water problem by opening the hood and finding the the two water hoses that pass from the engine compartment thru the firewall to the heater unit in the cabin. After driving enough for the temp gauge on the dash to read in the normal range, stop and touch the two hoses to see if they feel about the same warmth. If they do, and they are indeed warm then the water is flowing. If one feels hot and the other much cooler, then the water is not circulating well.
The door problem could be tested by doing a self-diagnostic test of the control system. I need to know whether you have the ATC type control (digital readout of temperature) or the conventional control (three knobs, no readout) to tell you the procedure. So write back and tell me which control type you have.
Also, check that fuse 17 under the dash on the driver side of the car is not blown or does not have a crack in its internal wire.
Write back and tell me which type of control you have and whether the hoses are similarly warm or not.
