Chrysler Repair: crankshaft bolt, crankshaft pulley, pulley bolt

Question
I have a 2000 sebring conv. with a 2.5 v6. I am having a difficult time taking off the crankshaft bolt to replace the timing belt. Please give me idea's ie: which way is the bolt threaded or anything like that.

Answer
Hi Bill,
The shop manual suggest going at it from the wheel housing. After you remove the tire, notice that there is a splash shield for the accessory drive belts. It is held in place by push-pins that you can release by gently prying outward on the lip of the inner circle which is a "lock".
Then remove the accessory drive belts. The alternator is removed by unloosening the bolt on the shaft of the idler pulley, then loosen the adjustment bolt. On the power steering unit there are two locking bolts, one in front one behind the plate, and also a pivot bolt that should be loosened. You will note a square hole for a 1/2" drive to move it.
The crankshaft pulley bolt is torqued on to 134 foot-pounds in the normal clockwise to tighten thread. It can be removed using a 22 mm socket. To hold the crankshaft in position while you torque the bolt head in the counterclockwise direction: insert a heavy long screwdriver or breaker bar in one of the slots in the pulley and wedge it against the engine block to prevent movement. Then use socket and long ratchet or breaker bar on the bolt head.
That is the best I can offer. I hope it helps.
