Chrysler Repair: starter chrysler lhs, 1999 chrysler lhs, solenoid switch

Question
1999 chrysler lhs
v6
3.5 liter high output motor

i think my starter is out, i get a single click noise when
i turn the key.  two days ago it started without problem and then all of a sudden stopped again.  the car cannot be jumped leading me to believe that the starter is the problem.  there is a new battery and all the cables are securely connected.

Answer
Hi Anthony,
If the click is the sound from the starter motor's solenoid (fairly loud) than I would agree that it is the motor itself unless the red wire from the battery direct to the solenoid switch is loose at that switch. Be careful if you check that to disconnect the - post clamp at the battery so as not to short the battery to ground. If it is a soft click of the solenoid relay and not the solenoid you are hearing, then check fuse G (40 amp) in the power distribution center. If that is ok, then the solenoid switch is bad, if it doesn't click loudly. If it does, then it pretty much has to be the starter motor itself. You can try tapping with a hammer on the armature end of the motor and see if that jars it back to life temporarily.
Let me know if you are going to change out the motor yourself as there are a couple of tips you need to do that.
