Chrysler Repair: 2000 cirrus 2.5 liter: starter motor flakey, air intake hose, starter solenoid

Question
roland, i have intermitent starter issue? turn key and nothing?  iam fimiliar with mechanics, generally if starter is bad, you hear a click from solenoid.  I hear nothing.  This was oly happening once in a while, i just keep sking ey out and putting back in and try again and eventually it will crank and start.  Now recently it wont turn over and no matter what i do, cant get it to crank.  Cleaned all positives and negatives, tgryed to check signal plug at starte wile cranking. did not get anything but i may have not had good ground on test light.  do you have any suggestions, also could yo tell me wherethe neutal safety switch is and igniton switch and also which wires i couldtest to eliminate these,  i do have a rand new starter, but hesitant due to not hearing a clik from solenod?  please help?

Answer
Hi Greg,
I would suggest that you check to see if the trans relay is clicking or not when you try to start it. It is located at the rear end of the power distribution center under the hood, hidden under the air intake hose where there are four relays. It is separate and lower than the rest of the center so don't overlook it.
If that is not clicking then it could be a bad relay or the safety switch is not working or is not grounded (but that is unlikely). If the relay clicks, then see if it puts out 12v on the brown wire because that one goes to the starter solenoid. If it does, then the solenoid or the brown wire is bad, if it doesn't then check fuse 8 in the PDC for possibly being cracked (intermittent) or blown; or the relay's internal points could be oxidized.  See if 12v arrives on yellow/orange wire at the relay socket when you try to start it. That is the power to the relay's activation coil.  If not then the ignition switch is bad, assuming that fuse 8 is ok.
So those are the possibilities.
