Chrysler Repair: Sebring Electrical, shadetree mechanic, timing belt

Is changing the timing belt on a 97 Sebring Convertable 2.5L to technical for a good shadetree mechanic? Is it possible the non-operating tach and odometer are related to a failed alternator. (The battery is fully charged)If not, what do you think?

I just have had a local mini-crisis with medical emergency of a neighbor so I will not be able to answer this question this evening. Please try again tomorrow when things have settled down. I am looking after one of the senior spouses while his better half is at the emergency room.
