Chrysler Repair: 97 dodge caravan: timing belt install procedure, crank shaft, dodge caravan

Question
what do you set timing belt on?how does it line up?

Answer
Hi Larry,
There are two engines that use timing belts, the 2.4 and the 3.0L so that is something I need to know. There is generally a timing mark on the crank shaft that aligns to a mark nearby, and similarly marks on the camshaft(s) sprocket(s) that align to marks relative to a fixed mark or marks on the two sprockets relative to each other. There is also a specification for setting up the marks before the belt is applied and a procedure for applying the belt so as to achieve the desired result. You may want to have a Haynes manual or similar to understand those details.
But if you wish, please let me know which engine you have and I'll try to be helpful within the limitations of what amount of info I can give you without illustrations. This site doesn't have provision for drawings or illustrations to be sent back.
