Chrysler Repair: 94 Concorde Camshaft position Sensor, camshaft position sensor, crankshaft sensor

Question
QUESTION: I read your response to Paul from October 2006 about his camshaft position sensor.  My son's car will not start after overheating a few times and I think this may be the problem. Will changing the shutdown relay correct the problem (what size needed?) or does the sensor have to be replaced?  And can the sensor be changed by a beginner?  He has a Chilton's for the car but not sure if instructions for that in it.  Expected cost if taken to mechanic?

ANSWER: Hi Colleen,
Check the powertrain controller memory for a fault code 11  before assuming that is the cause. The Haynes manual I know does show the location and simple procedure for changing the crank sensor, so perhaps the Chilton's does too. To check for the code use the ignition key: "On-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less. Then watch the check engine light which remains 'on' to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause then repeat to assure an accurate count. Then group the counts in pairs in the order of appearance to form the fault codes. The code 55 will always be last as it means "end of readout". If you see an 11 then that is indeed the crank sensor. It is easy to replace so let me know if the Chilton's isn't clear. Do tell me which engine is in the car:3.3 or 3.5L. A mechanic will no doubt want at least a half hour of labor at whatever the going rate is around you. The sensor is probably around $50 but comparison shop for that too.

QUESTION: Thank you for your quick response.  I emailed this to my son at home since I am at work.  It is a 3.3 - does that make a difference?  If I pick up a relay on the way home to try that first, what amp/size do I ask for?

Answer
Hi Colleen,
No, it is just easier to know which engine if indeed that is the problem (crankshaft sensor)and you ask for any directions. There is a code for the asd relay as well, but see what codes come out before you buy anything. The asd will not work for example, if the crank sensor doesn't work. But that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the relay. So do the diagnosis first. By the way, you can also get a tranlator for the code numbers at www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html
Thanks for the evaluation.
