Chrysler Repair: 2001 Chrysler town and country heater problem, chrysler town and country, calibration routine

Question
In September my air conditioning stopped getting cold in the van. My heater has been working fine, but the past week it blew out coldish air but didnt get hot. Yesterday it was blowing cold air so I turned the power button off and then it started blowing 3 times as much cold air. Why is it blowing when I have the power off and what can be causing this? We dont have a lot of money to spend to fix  this so if you have any suggestions it would be helpful!

Answer
Hi Katy,
There are several internal doors in the distribution housing under the dash that direct the air to various places, and which also mix hot (or cold if you are running the ac) with incoming air from outside in proportion as you request to provide the proper mix to get the desired temperature. Those doors are controlled by electrical motors that are powered by the control unit. So when you turn it off there could be a spontaneous movement of the doors that changes the air flow, etc. The whole system has self-diagnostic capability amd also a re-calibration routine that wouuld be worth trying, but it is too long an instruction to type in for you here. I don't have a document scanner either so the one thing I can offer is for a xerox copy of the pages that describe the system so you can do the self tests and then once you find out what is wrong you can get back to me for specific suggestions on how to fix it. If you will use the "thank and rate" tab below you will find a space to enter comments where you can tell me a postal mailing address to which I could send the pages. I would appreciate your rating my answer as well, and consider whether to nominate me as "expert of the month" which I am hoping to become for this month :)

PS You also might want to have the ac refrigerant charge level checked and if needed replenished as even in the winter the ac is used to "dry" the incoming air before it is directed to the windshield when you need to defrost it.
