Chrysler Repair: Radio Trouble shooting for 88 New Yorker, audio power amplifier, chrysler new yorker

Question
Hello Rolland:
I have recently ran into a problem with installing a stereo into a 1988 Chrysler New Yorker Landau the stereo system is the type that was installed when the car was manufactured I had to buy a second one as the first one ran into some problems after installing it into a dodge caravan it worked fine at first but then the rear back speakers shorted out against some bare metal and grounded out thus damaging the unit so I bought and exact replacement for it I connect the grey clip in the back and the black clip in the back of the stereo from the car harness and then plug the power antenna in this I believe to be the correct way to connect it as all of the lights light up properly like it use to... ok now I was experimenting with the old stereo trying to see if it would still work I put it in this way and it blew the 10 amp fuse I think it is number 2 so I pulled out the old stereo and replaced the fuse and put in the new stereo now everything works on the new stereo like it is suppose to except that no power is getting to the speakers...? I tested off the back of the stereo while it was plugged in and it will power up a small speaker no problem so I know the stereo works but for some reason my speakers do not so I went to the library and got a chiltons manual and was trying to find the schematic for my stereo system the closest I found was for a 1986 chrysler new yorker I could not find any other years listing the stereo section I am assuming they may all be the same even for 1988
the book is from 81 - 92 chiltons so page 6-254 it shows a audio power amplifier it says center of cowl top panel where does the cowl mean?  then the diagram also talks about a audio power amplifier relay the fuse that blew says that it goes to the speaker realy according to my owners manual I am thinking maybe the relay burn out or something where would the speaker relay be located in my car can you offer any suggestion's?

Answer
Hi Tom,
This is a complicated question. I need to study the wiring diagrams for the '88 as well as understand exactly what is going on here. The reference to a Dodge Caravan (year?) confuses me. Is that vehicle involved now? As you know in those years the deluxe radios (with "name brand" speakers) had a separate power amp at each speaker (and a low power/high impedence signal went to each such speaker), for example, and then it phased into a separate larger amp that powered all the conventional speaker with full power/low impedence signals. I am not clear if you have purchased exact replacement units for the original ones or perhaps you are mixing apples with oranges.
In any case, I have your email address and you can reach me at rfinston@hotmail.com with a little more of an explanation about the type of radio that was originally installed, is the replacement of exactly the same type, how is the Caravan involved, etc. Lets work this out by emails.
The cowl in this case is the top of the dash, presumably below that pad, or under the dash directly under the middle of the cowl pad.
