Chrysler Repair: 2002 Chrysler Sebring cold rough idle, fuel air mixture, upper radiator hose

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2002 Chrysler Sebring 3.0. 80,000 miles.
When at cold start the engine will idle rough when put in gear or neutral. In park when rpm's are up it is fine. Also when cold and you come to a stop in gear it will idle rough until you pull out, then it runs fine. After car is warmed up rough idle is gone in neutral or drive with brake on.

ANSWER: Hi John,
The main controller of the fuel/air mixture relating to the temp of the engine is the coolant temp sensor. That sensor is located near the front top of the engine where the upper radiator hose attaches. It has a couple of pins which you can access by lifting the tab on the side of the plug and removing the plug. It should read about 10,000 to 14,000 ohms when the engine is cold, and then drops to around 1,000 ohms when the engine is hot. If it doesn't do that, then you will have poor idle/performance.
Another possibility is the egr valve located in a pipe that runs from the cross-over exhaust pipe up to the throttle body and air intake.  It has a round top with a vacuum hose while the body of the valve is attached to the intake manifold. Between the two is a flange with a stem inside. The stem has a circumferential slot into which you can place the tip of a screwdriver and move the stem. If it seems sticky in closing, which the spring action helps it to do, then spray some WD-40 on the stem where it enters the body of the valve to free it up.
Finally, do a code readout for faults that the engine controller may have noticed and stored in its memory. Turn the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. The watch the odometer window to see if the reading changes to show  a 4-digit number, which would be a code. Then write back and tell me the number. If that doesn't work and there is an Autozone parts store nearby go there for a free readout, or to an independent shop which will do it for $40 or so.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick feed back.
I have no codes.
Is the egr valve black, 2 vacuume hoses going to it, on left side of engine - facing the engine from the front?

Answer
Hi John,
Did the odometer go blank and then show nothing? or didn't it change at all? If the latter, then I would say the readout didn't work, and you need a readout with a plug in reader. If the former, then you don't have any codes.
On the egr, I am not sure if by "front" you mean the front of the engine or the front of the car. So look along the big exhaust pipe that goes from the front (side that faces the front of the car) exhaust manifold toward the rear of the car (and passes over the top of the transmission), and after a joint in that pipe you will see small pipe that branches off and up toward the valve (which is mounted horizontally), with a vacuum hose that goes to the round top and one that goes to the base of the valve. Look for a flange in between the base and the top to find the stem I spoke of.
