water pump o-ring is leaking on rear of pump. was wondering if i can change the o-ring without removing pump, going at it from under the intake.

Hi Gary,
The return coolant pipe is held in place by a bolt at the rear of the right head thru a bracket.  However the by-pass pipe at the front end to which a small hose attaches I believe prevents the simple removal out the rear. It is reasonable to remove the intake manifold to release that restriction and allow you to pull the pipe far enough to apply a new o-ring. Take a look at that possibility for sure as the alternative is more complicated as you know. However it the timing belt is looking worn it might be smart to bite the bullet and go in that way.
