Chrysler Repair: 94 Plymouth Sundance hesitates at low speed, plymouth sundance, engine controller

Question
Dear Sir, I have a 94 Plymouth Sundance 2.2L,F/I, Automatic. From a dead stop to about 25 mph she hesitates and sputters with no particular unordinary engine sounds(ie valves etc). From 25 on she runs great, pickup is fine. Plugs, wires and air filter replaced 1k miles ago. Can you please give me some advice. Thanks in advance

Answer
Hi Floyd,
The usual first step is to determine whether the engine controller has detected a problem and stored it as a 2-digit number (fault code) in its memory. Fortunately you can get the fault code readout with your ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light which remains "on" to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause, then repeat for accuracy. Group the number of flashes in pairs in the order of appearance to form the two digit fault codes. Then go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a translator, or write back with the code numbers. You should always get code 55 last as it means 'end of readout'. This code readout is the most economic and efficient way to diagnose the issue. If you don't find anything other than 55 let me know and we can try to locate something that can't be recognized by the engine controller approach.
