Chrysler Repair: service eng. lite on: 99 Sebring, sebring lxi, sevral days

just bought used 99 sebring lxi service eng lite came on after driving for a day took off battery lite went out came back on sevral days later  engine was serviced before sold

Hi Jim,
The light being on means that the engine controller detected a problem that affects the exhaust pollution levels. It has stored information as to the problem as a fault code. You may be able to get the 4-digit code using the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer of the speedo unit to see if the mileage changes to instead show a 4-digit number. If not, then you have to get a readout for the code via a plug under the dash next to the steering column. Autozone parts stores will often do that for free. Or you can go to an independent garage where they should give you a readout for $40 or less.
Once you have the number(s) write back and we'll take it from there.
