Chrysler Repair: speedometer/transmission shift problem, input sensor, shift problem

Question
2000 sebring
After I charged the battery the transmission does not upshift and the speedo
does not work.  All other electronics seem to work fine.  Also I replaced the
battery with a new one.
Thanks,
Jack

Answer
Hi Jack Paul,
That speedo and shift lock-up in 2nd gear is symptomatic of a failure of the output speed sensor on the transmission as its signal is used by the speedo and the trans controller to operate. If you want to verify that have the codes readout. You may be able to get it with the ignition switch:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window on the speedo to see if the mileage changes to show the number 0720 which is the fault code for a lost output sensor signal. If you can't get a readout that way, then try an Autozone parts store where they will do a readout for free, most likely.
The sensor is on the side of the trans that faces the front of the car, about midline height, to the left (driver's side) of the vertical shifter rod. It has a mate, the input sensor that looks similar at the other side of the rod. Just release the plug (lift tab), unscrew the old one, screw in the new one to a torque of about 20 foot pounds (similar to a spark plug) and you should be back in business. If it isn't that, then there could be damage to one of the two wires that service the sensor so check those for any signs of physical damage.
Good luck on this fairly straight forward problem. I think the battery charging had nothing to do with this issue, just serendipity as far as I can see.
