Chrysler Repair: 88 Lebaron brakes: pedal drops when starting, brakes drag, caliper piston, piston seals

Question
I have a 1988 Lebaron 2.2L turbo convertible.  When I start the motor the vacuum pulls the brake pedal down and applies the front brakes.  How can I correct this? Also, where can I find a diagram of the vacuum lines?

Answer
Hi Leonard,
The brake pedal will normally drop when you start the engine with your foot resting gently on the pedal. So what you may have is mainly binding front calipers due to worn out caliper retaining pins or their rubber bushings. These are easy to replace as they are the first things to be removed when servicing the brakes. Be careful to remove the pins with a tight fitting 6-point socket because the metal is soft. If you buy replacement pins and bushings (available at a trade-type parts store) you will find that they now have 7 mm allen head fittings which require such a socket tool (this appears to be the only item that needs a 7 mm size, interestingly). Torque the pins to about 30 foot-pounds.
It also may be that the caliper piston seals are swollen or simply that you need to flush the system with new fluid.
Those are my ideas. I hope they are useful to you.
