Answer
Hi Rod,
Three approaches/possibilities:
There may be an egr valve on the engine but it depends upon where it was sold. So take a look on the underhood sticker to see if the diagram shows as exhaust gas recirculation valve. Let me know and I can describe how to check and maintain it.
Second might be a dirty throttle body/butterfly/idle air by-pass channel and idle control valve. That you would clean by removing the air intake hose and using solvent and a q-tip to clean those surfaces/channels.
Finally, try to see if there are fault codes stored in the computer. Use the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less. Then watch the check engine light to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat to make sure you have an accurate count. Then group the numbers in pairs in the order of appearance to form the two digit fault codes. The last code is always 55 because it means end of readout. Then write back or go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a translation.
I can give you specific instructions if you get any fault codes.
