Chrysler Repair: 1999 Sebring with P0760 code, inner fender, code question

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have a 1999 sebring that is not shifting out of first and gives a code of P0760.  I had it in a shop and they said the tcm was full of water, cleaned and dryed computer and the car ran great for a day.  Now is is not shifting again.  I cannot even find the tcm to see if it is wet or what.  Any suggestions?

ANSWER: Hi Dana,
You didn't say whether you have the Sebring Convertible or the Sedan. The TCM in the convert is on the left side of the engine compartment, behind the radiator closure panel. The PCM is on the inner fender, next to it is the Power distribution box, and inboard of that is TCM. On the Sedan, it is also on the left side, but mounted crosswise, just in front of the strut tower, and behind the PCM.
The 0760 is really about the OD solenoid, located in the solenoid box on the front side of the trans. It could set that code due to a TCM problem but also: a control wiring problem to the solenod from the TCM, the solenoid itself, or the transmission control relay. There is a multistep procedure to test out the possibilities but it is centered on the use of the diagnostic readout box and wiring diagrams. I wonder if you let it dry out some more that it might not solve itself. But anyway, you now know where to look.

QUESTION: Roland,  Thank you.  I guess I need to find a good shop in Orlando.  It appears that if I disconnect power for a while the TCM has to relearn the car and it drives o.k, then back to the same old thing.  I will try to find a shop that can take the solenoid and test it, I see that for that I have to get inside part of the trannie.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Dana,
Thanks for the follow-up report. The solenoid is located in the box on the side of the trans and it is accessible without removing the transmission or overhauling anything major which is good. It could either be the solenoid itself or the wires from the tcm to the solenoid, or the transcontrol relay, or possibly the TCM. Go to a shop that has a Chrysler service experience base, a DRB III readout box, and a service manual. I can xerox and postal mail 3 pages that give a step-by-step for sorting out the answer if you need it. Also, check that the fluid in the trans is at the proper level, but don't overfill and only use Chrysler ATF +4 if you need to add.
