Chrysler Repair: 2000 Voyager: speedo flaky, trans wont upshift, vertical rod, transmission controller

Question
I needed to replace my battery for my van, is there a particular website that shows step-by-step instructions?
Also, the speedodometer goes up and down sometimes, as the engine light comes on.
The other day, the transmission wouldn't shift gears, as it stayed at 4000 rpm

Answer
Hi Tony,
Take a look at www.autozone.com for instruction on the battery replacement.
The speedo, non-shift of the trans are probably related to one another in that there is a sensor on the side of the trans that faces the front of the (at the very end of that side) which senses the speed of the wheels and also tells the transmission controller what the speed is. When that sensor gets flaky your speedo and your shifting will both go flaky. It is called 'output speed sensor' and it has an electrical plug and merely unscrews from the body of the transmission. it is to the right of the vertical rod that actually changes the transmission gear setting. So you can get one of those from a parts store or a dealer and install that yourself. Just gently lift the locking tab on the plug, remove the plug, unscrew and screw in the new one. Torque it to about 20 foot-pounds which is similar to a spark plug.
