Chrysler Repair: Plymouth 97 breeze ac: blower works on high only, blower motor resistor, blower works

Question
first three fan speeds will not work.  High speed fan knob requires carboard to get it to work.

Answer
Hi Nancy,
The failure of the low speeds means that a component called the blower motor resistor block has failed. You can get a replacement at a dealer or perhaps a parts store. To replace it you merely have to remove any panel/duct at the lower edge of the instrument panel on the passenger side so you can get a visual and spacial access to the blower on the bottom side of the heater/ac distribution housing. You should see the bottom of the blower (run it to locate it if necessary) on the right hand end of the housing. Then notice the wires from the motor plug into a socket nearby. Remove the plug. Then locate 2 screws on either side of the socket, and remove those. The resistor block is then free to drop down out of the housing where it is located. Just reverse steps after installing the new block and you should have all your fan speeds again. I suspect that the high speed will still require fiddling with the switch because that is a separate issue.
