Chrysler Repair: Fan wont run, 2001 PT, snap on modis, pink wire

Question
i have a 2001 pt cruiser and the cooling fan doesn't run. it don't even come on with the a/c. i put a new relay in and checked the fuses. i can make the fan cycle on/off only by using the snap on modis. what gives!

Answer
Hi Jay,
I am not sure what you mean by a "snap on modis". If that is an electronic test tool with a program that allows you to initiate the fan operation via communication digitally with the engine controller data bus, than I would believe that the fuse, relay and fan are OK. That would mean that the control wire to the relay from the controller is bad, or the controller itself is bad. It should activate the relay whenever the AC is called for, or the temp reaches about 200F. I doubt that both signals fail to reach the controller to do that, so I suspect the controller is at fault. But it is expensive, so don't replace that without hard evidence that it is at fault. I would look at the voltage on the dark blue/pink wire (I believe that is correct but I don't have a PT manual) wire at the relay to see if it is changes when you ask for AC. If not, then that wire is not connected properly to the controller, or the controller is bad. Also verify that you have 12V on the red/light green and on the light green/black wire at the relay with the ignition in the run position. Those are voltage supplies for the fan motor and the relay actuation coil, which both have to be present to pass along the current to the motor.
