Answer
Hi Robert,
A well-equipped and knowledgeable trans shop is your best bet. There are not too many possibilities but here they are: transmission solenoid pressure switch assembly, a long shot that there is a problem with the output speed sensor,  and the internal rebuild because of a slipping 3rd gear clutch. The diagnostic readout box III used by Chrysler dealers can fairly quickly determine if either of the first two might be the answer, and if not, then the last, a rebuild is necessary. You might try buying an output speed sensor yourself and replacing the present one. It is located on the side of the van facing the front of the car, just to the rear of the vertical shift rod (there is a very similar-looking sensor, input sensor to the front of that same rod). Gently lift the tab on the electrical plug and remove, unscrew the old, install the new, torque to about 20 foot-pounds (similar to a spark plug) then see if anything changes. If not, then a shop test to see if it could be the pressure switch assembly is not properly setting the clutch is the only remaining possibility, short of rebuild.
So that is my best suggestion as to how to approach this.
Please let me know how it works out.
Roland
