Chrysler Repair: 1999 Chysler LHS poor acceleration, mixture problem, 1999 chrysler lhs

Question
Hi, Roland. I have a 1999 Chrysler LHS 3.5L with 145,000 miles. I has poor acceleration, "out of the gate" but when it gets up to speeds of 55, 60 its fine, good torque when passing. But when am low gears doesn't seem to have that same take off power. What would be the first steps in taking to improve upon this matter? Air filter, fuel filter, pcv, oxygen sensor, spark plugs, etc.?? Transmission fluid looks good,at correct level no smell, not burnt. Please let me know, thank you.

Answer
Hi Donell,
If you don't sense any miss of the ignition system, then a mixture problem could be involved. But the best first check would be to do a fault code readout of the powertrain controller memory. It might work with the ignition key: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on"  doing that switching in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window in the dash to see if it changes from mileage to show a 4-digit number which would be the fault code. Let me know the number if it does and we'll go from there. Otherwise you may get a free readout at an Autozone Parts store, or at a shop with a "special" for aobut $40. Always get the specific number and name of the fault. Write back and we can then figure out what to do.
To start on other approaches may be a waste of money if there is already some indication of the problem on-board, stored in the memory.
