Chrysler Repair: ac clutch wont activate:00 T&C, chrysler town and country, positive temperature coefficient

Question
QUESTION: I just put in a brand new air compressor in my 2000 chrysler town and country.  The clutch does not engage.  I have checked all fuses under dash board they are all good.  I have checked all fuses in relay box they are all good as well.  I hooked a "power checker" up the wires that come from the car that are suppost to plug into the air compressor and its showing that there is no power getting to the compressor.  I need help getting ready to send my wife and 2 toddlers on a 3 hour drive to mother in laws.

ANSWER: Hi Dan,
If is a pretty simple circuit:
A positive temperature coefficient device (circuit breaker) in position 1 of a row 10 such devices in the middle of the under dash fuse box feeds power to the ac clutch relay activation coil. That is the white/black wire at pin 86 of the relay (the pin closest to the edge of the power distribution box) and it should have power to it when the key is in the start or run position. It also runs the fuel pump relay so it probably is OK. It comes into the power distribution center on pin 1 of the light green plug.
The pin across the relay socket from 86 goes to the powertrain control module (pin 64) and when you ask for ac that pin is grounded by the module which should activate the clutch. The only thing that would prevent the grounding of the pin is if the ac refrigerant level were too low. Have you refilled the system properly? If so and you have the voltage to the compressor clutch relay on pin 30 (the pin toward the rear of the box) which comes from fuse 11 under the dash, then when the relay closes that power should be sent to the clutch on the dark blue/black wire. If you have the power to the relay on both pin 86 and 30 and the the relay doesn't close, then perhaps the pressure transducer is not working properly to give the OK to the controller to go ahead and ground the pin 85 of the ac clutch relay. I can describe the three wires of the transducer if you think that might be the problem.

QUESTION: I had been told that the only way to refill the system with coolant was for the clutch to engage while you had the freon hooked up to the line. Is there another way?  Because I know the system has no freon at all.

Answer
Hi Dan,
The manual says that a refilling (charging) machine should be used. The system is supposed to be tested for leaks and then evacuated. There is a detailed procedure that then follows. So my suggestion would be to have this accomplished at an ac shop. I know you have time constraints so that is probably the best solution. I can xerox and postal mail you the pages from the manual that describe how to refill it using the proper machine to do the job. Just tell me a postal mailing address via the "thank and rate" tab.
