Chrysler Repair: 1999 Sebring convertable 2.5 V6, pulley bolt, solenoid switch

Question
my question is i started my car 3 times and it stalled, sounded like it was starving for fuel.(i just filled it the night before.) after it stalled the third time she would not crank over. ( the battery is fully charged and all other power components are working and all dash lights are on.) since this happened i have changed the starter. i still get nothing no crank, no sound at all except for the click of the relays. i am really stumped with this one. any help you could give would be very helpful. thanks, john

Answer
Hi John,
If you are getting both the sound of the relay in the power distribution center and the solenoid switch on the starter motor then the only possibilities are that the clamp on the + post of the battery is poorly conducting or loose, or similarly for the - post of the battery, or the ground points on the left strut tower and the rear of the transmission might be loose or corroded. If those all check out, then I would try to jump a wire from the brown wire connection at the starter motor solenoid to the thick red battery wire at the starter motor to see if the starter will then fire up. Be very careful not to ground the jumper when it is atttached to the battery as that will get very hot and burn you/disintergrate if that happens. That would be the "acid test" of the starter motor. If that doesn't cause the starter motor to rotate then either the motor is not good or the engine is "locked" due to water in one or more of the combustion chambers. See if you can turn over the engine with a socket wrench applied to the crank shaft pulley bolt.
If you are not getting a click at the solenoid then check the starter relay for 12V going thru the relay to the starter solenoid on the brown wire, and if not then check fuse 8 in the power distribution center under the hood.
