Chrysler Repair: problem with transmission: drops to 2nd, dodge neon, negative cable

Question
I have a 2004 dodge neon with a 2.0liter with overdrive the car goes in every gear when it goes into the 4th gear it goes back to 2nd on it own could this be the trans control module be bad and if so would i have to replaced the whole computer! and where is this module at on the tranny or under dash I need help

Answer
Hi Robert,
When it does that it is going into 'limp-in mode' which is self-defensive to prevent damage to the transmission. 2nd gear uses the fewest parts until a correction can be effected. It also means that a code has been stored in the trans controller memory that pertains to the reason for it going into that mode. So the best thing to do is find out the code number and follow up on that cause. You might be able to get it by the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see if the mileage reading changes to show a 4-digit number preceded by a P. Let me know the number and we can go from there. If that doesn't work, then a reader plugged into a socket under the dash by the steering column will get the number. Autozone parts stores will often do the readout for free if there is one near you or an independent shop will do it for $40 or less. I would not do anything without the code as you will just throw money at the problem with little likelihood of hitting on the solution.

PS This is how to remove the TCM but I don't recommend that yet. It is evidentally on the right front side on the frame behind the wheel well, but I don't have the exact description.
Disconnect battery negative cable.
Raise vehicle on hoist.
Partially remove right front wheel splash shield.
Disconnect TCM 60-way connector (TCM 60-Way Connector).
Remove three (3) TCM bracket-to-rail screws and remove TCM/bracket assembly from vehicle (TCM/Bracket Assembly).
Remove four (4) bracket-to-TCM screws and remove bracket (TCM Bracket).
