Chrysler Repair: Speed control not reliable:2000 Chrysler Cirrus, vehicle speed sensor, vacuum hoses

Question
What would cause my cruise control to disengage or fail to engage. Does not happen all the time. If the engine is turned off then back on...it seems to reset.

Answer
Hi John,
The possibilities are several:
A maladjusted brake switch (observe for how much movement of the pedal before the brake light comes on. If it is very minimal then the switch could be self-activating).
Loose or corroded connections at the speed control servo. The servo is located just in-board of the left strut tower.
Loose of leakly vacuum hoses from intake manifold to servo.
Speed control cable from servo to throttle not firmly attached
Non-smooth operation of the throttle valve.
Servo could fail (vacuum handling-wise).
Also check for fault codes:turn ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less. Then watch odometer window to see if milage is replaced by 4 digit numbers which are fault codes. If this doesn't produce codes, then get a fault code readout with a reader for example at Autozone Parts store where they will often do a readout for free.
Let me know if you get any codes that relate to the vehicle speed sensor or the speed control system itself.
