Chrysler Repair: 1996 Chrysler LHS oil light and overheating, oil pressure gauge, 1996 chrysler lhs

Question
Hi... I drove my 1996 LHS today and after 10 miles the oil light came only when i
stop the car for a few seconds, and the temp, gauge went up.  But when i keep
driving the oil light it's gone, only happens when i stop the car to wait for the
lights to change. One more thing I just change the oil today @ walmart

thanks a lot for your help

Answer
Hi Mario,
The light came on because the pressure was lower than the set point for the oil pressure sensor. The oil pressure may be lower at idle because of two things: first the engine was running warmer which reduces the viscosity of the oil and thus its pressure at a given idle speed, second the oil weight that was used at the oil change may be lower than previously used which also reduces the pressure (is that possibly the case?). I would not be concerned about the oil pressure light being "on" at idle. It is only if it comes on at engine rpm higher than idle that I would definitely be concerned and not drive the car until it can be determined if the pressure is ok or not. That is done with a calibrated oil pressure gauge in place of the oil pressure light sender device.
I would watch the temperature and if it rises to near the limit then verify that at least one of the two fans is running. Also verify that you have coolant in the overflow bottle when the engine is cold. If not, add coolant to the line. If the engine seems to be consistently running hotter than you are accustomed to, then investigate why that might be.
So, in conclusion I wouldn't be concerned about the light being on at idle, but if it comes on while you are moving then stop and find out why. If you want to get back a margin of safety you could change the oil to one grade higher than was just used. And be sure that one fan comes on at around mid scale and that both fans are on when the temp scale nears the top. Check fuse D if the fans don't work.
