Chrysler Repair: 1988 lebaron convertable 4cyl,turbo, pressure relief valve, virtual tie

Question
145k miles.Sounds like valve or lifter noise at start up and idle. Seems to go away on acceleration. Any suggestion for fix? thanks ahead of time

Answer
Hi Ray,
It may well be that the bearing wear inside the engine has lowered the oil pressure such that the lifters aren't being pumped up to spec. My first approach would be to change the oil at the next routine change to a one step higher viscosity number. That will raise the pressure in the oil system and may solve the problem at no cost whatsoever. After that, measuring the pressure and considering whether there is an issue with the oil pump, internal clogging of the oil pick-up in the pan, or an oil pressure relief valve problem might be the cause. But if you are not into jumping directly to those, do try changing the oil as described.

PS I would be very appreciative if you would use the "thank/rate" tab below and find the "nomination?" item. If you would change the 'no' to a 'yet', that would give me another vote for 'expert of the month' for November. This contest ends today at 6 pm CST so time is of the essence, and I am in a virtual tie situation. Many thanks.
