Chrysler Repair: park/neutral safety system switch: 89 elect. trans, chrysler new yorker, outer posts

Question
where is the neutral system switch located in a 1989 chrysler new yorker 6 cylinder. THXS!!!

Answer
Hi Johnathan,
I assume by the "neutral system switch" you mean the switch that allows the starter motor relay to be activated only if the trans shift lever is in park or neutral. If not, let me know.
On the electronic 4-speed automatic trans used in your '89 Chrysler with the V-6 3.0L, that switch is on the rear corner of the side of the trans that faces the front of the car. It very near the vertical shifter rod, but it is the one that is mounted at a 45 degree angle face not on the longer side of the trans that is facing directly to the front of the car. It has a gray three-wire plug with wires colored brown/yellow, dark blue, and violet. I am not certain but you may want to be prepared for some fluid to leak out of the socket when you unscrew the switch by having a can ready to catch it, and have the new one ready to be reinserted if you believe that switch to be the problem. Torque it in to 25 foot pounds. If you want to test the switch with a continuity or ohm meter before you remove it:
In the 'reverse' position the two outer posts of the plug socket should be connected, otherwise open in other gear positions. The middle post should be grounded when the shifter is in park or neutral, otherwise it should be disconnected from ground (the transmission case serves as  the ground).
