Chrysler Repair: 1995 LHS radio antenna not retracting, radio antenna, linkage problem

Question
Hi Roland,
My radio antenna on my 1995 LHS has slowly but surely stopped retracting
completely. It's one of those types that should automatically retract
completely when the engine or radio is turned off. When I turn the engine or
radio on, the antenna goes up, and when I turn either off, it retracts part-
ways down. For a while, I was able to simply touch the top of the antenna and
it would proceed to retract. Now, it won't go any further. The antenna "motor"
or whatever drives it is still humming and obviously working. Any idea of
what I need to replace? The whole antenna or is it some type of linkage
problem. And, is it difficult to do? My partner is very mechanical and if he had
directions/instructions, he could probably fix it. Your input is GREATLY
appreciated! Thanks so much!!

Answer
Hi Margie,
The chances are the teeth on the mast rod are worn down to the point they don't mesh with the gear drive so you need a new mast. Get it a dealer or other auto supply but be sure it is for your year and model. Here is how to change it:
remove the cap nut
turn the ignition key to the Accessory position and turn on the radio
while the mast is moving up pull upward to remove mast and contact spring and drive rod from the mast tube, noticing that the teeth are facing the front of the car (or whichever way they are facing in your situation so you can put the new one in with the teeth facing the same direction).
Insert the new drive rod into the mast tube with drive teeth facing in the proper direction
turn off the radio and guide the mast into the tube, the antenna may not lower all the way the first time
replace the cap nut and tighten to 15 foot-pounds
turn radio on and off to raise and lower the antenna
the mast should fully lower after recycling a few times.
That is from the '94 manual which no doubt applies to your '95
