Chrysler Repair: engine dies while driving, dodge grand caravan, grand caravan

Question
I have a 1996 dodge grand caravan. It has a new fuel pump, new fuel filter and I have it services every 3000 miles. I can be driving on the highway at 60 mph, the engine starts cutting out and then dieing. It starts this when I have the air conditioner running. Most of the time it will stop if I turn the air off. the other day it kept on dieing for a while. After a short time it will restart again. I hope you can give me some insight about the problem. Thank You, Verna

Answer
Hi Verna,
I suspect one of the ignition sensors is breaking down due to heatup and then it recovers as it cools, but there is a better way to narrow in on it. Use the ignition key: turn it "on-off-on-off-on and leave it on" doing that in an elapsed time of 5 seconds or less. Then watch the check engine light, which remains "on" to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat to verify an accurate count. The group the numbers in pairs, in the order of appearance, to form two-digit numbers which are fault numbers. Then write me back with the numbers that you observed and we can go from there. Also tell me which engine you have. The fault codes are also available at www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html but you will need direction as to how to go about fixing whatever the reason is.
