Chrysler Repair: 2.5L V-6 Engine dies, then restarts when battery disc/conn., sebring conv, crank sensor

Question
Roland,

I have a 98 Sebring Conv with 138,000 miles.  Up until a few days ago the car ran perfect.  The problem started when the engine suddenly died while driving and would not restart.  I had the car towed home and troubleshooting showed no power to the fuel pump and no spark.  After several hours of troubleshooting I disconnected the battery  cable.  When I reconnected the cable the car started normally.  But when I test drove the car the engined died again after about 10 miles.  I disconnected and reconnected the battery cable again and the car restarted.  The situation occurred again after being driven about 8 miles.  Any ideas?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Ralph,
You didn't mention the time frame involved between the engine dieing and the resumption of starting ability. It may be a failing cam or crank sensor which self-recovers after the engine shuts down, due to the sensor cooling down. Have you checked for fault codes stored in the engine controller? The crank code is 0320, the cam is 0340. Another possibility is that you may have cracked fuse in the power distribution center that is opening when it gets warm, and then closing when it cools. Check fuses 5 and 10 in the power center in the engine compartment. Finally there may be a flakey ground connection of the - post battery clamp; check the one on the left strut tower and the one on the transmission. And of course check the battery clamps and cables for corrosion.
I am curious to learn what you find the problem to be. Feel free to send a 'follow up' with the results.
