Chrysler Repair: Engine shuts down after starting,no guages: van, remote keyless entry, fuel pumps

Question
The van was given to us by the in-laws.  They also had the same problem.  When you turn the key on prior to start the gauges will not work.  If the gages will not work then then van will start but will almost immediately shut down.  It acts like the fuel has been shut off.  If you let the van sit for a few hours it will start with no problems.  This was happening every so often, now it is happening about every week.  We have had it in to the dealer with no success.  Starters have been replaced, fuel pumps have been replaced....

Answer
Hi Cami,
I believe you have a problem with the vehicle theft security system (VTSS) in that the body control module is not clearing the armed state so the powertrain controller will not sustain the engine operation. This can be investigated by means of a Chrysler Diagnostic Readout Box III at a dealer.
But if you want to see if this is true on your own, try avoiding the use of the security system entirely. To do this only secure the van by means of the hand-operated push button door locks. Do not use the key lock, power door lock, or the remote keyless entry device to secure the van when you park it. Then see if that obviates this sort of problem.
In addition to noticing when the gauges don't work, monitor the theft security light on the message center to see if it shows a particular condition when you do or don't have the problem.
If you successfully avoid the no start by avoiding the use of the theft system then you can, if you choose, go to the dealer and ask them to use the DRB and the Body Computer diagnostic manual to trouble shoot the system which is called the VTSS.
